Milton Cottage is a delightful traditional thatched cottage tucked away down a little lane on the outskirts of South Milton village, which is situated between the local villages of Thurlestone and Hope Cove, and the local market towns of Kingsbridge and Salcombe. Milton Cottage is a perfect retreat for those wanting to be away from the hustle and bustle yet all amenities are only a short drive away. Set in a secluded plot, Milton Cottage has a lovely big garden, ideal for kids to play in or for the dogs to stretch their legs. There is also plenty of parking for 3 cars. The cottage dates back to the 16th century and boasts a wealth of period features including large inglenook fireplaces, traditional stone walls, beams and sloping floors. It is worth noting that ceiling and door heights vary throughout the cottage so anyone over 6ft tall will have to keep their wits to avoid a bump to the head. There are also many small steps throughout the property but all this adds to the character and history of the cottage.

Arriving at Milton Cottage, a long sloped driveway suitable for 3 cars welcomes you onto the property. A barn door opens into the spacious and impressive original stone walled entrance hall with gallery walls, seating for shoe removal and a few steps leading to the lounge.

The ground floor boasts an open-plan lounge and dining room. This period living space is in keeping with the traditional features of the cottage. The lounge, separated by a single step up to the dining area, is well presented with an exposed stone wall inglenook fireplace, log burner and comfortable seating across two sofas and an accent armchair. The lounge offers great relaxation for guests to unwind, whether it is with a book from the corner shelf library or watching a film on the DVD-player and TV. A fair speed WiFi-internet is available, as this secluded property does have limited phone signal.

The dining area is a generously spacious room with an exquisite vintage farmhouse dining table and chairs. Spanning across the majority of the room, the dining table seating up to 8 guests, majestically stands in front of the once large inglenook fireplace, which now features a marvellous ornamental brass charger plate.  The perfect finish to the dining room is the gorgeous antique wooden sideboard, great for serving from.

On to the country style kitchen, this bright and light cooking area offers a comprehensive range of wall and base units filled with a wide variety of crockery, cutlery and cookware.  Integrated appliances include the dishwasher, double oven with warming drawer, full size standing fridge freezer and gas hob set into the inglenook. Additional appliances include a toaster, kettle and microwave found in the walk-in larder.

Opposite the larder, a door leads out to the rear garden patio. This large al-fresco patio is the perfect indoor-outdoor entertainment area when combined with the conservatory. The outdoor space is inclusive of a wonderful picnic bench, BBQ and antique cast iron bird watching bench. The huge lawned garden continues from the patio and expands as far back as the eye can see. Perfect for a family game of rounder’s or a paradise for pets.

Double French doors lead back into the house through the conservatory. This warm, bright and large living space has a dual aspect, with plenty of comfy seating, ideal for relaxation, watching the kids and pets while they play in the garden, plus a utility corner. A base unit integrates the utility with a tumble dryer, washing machine and sink.

The galley corridor connected to the conservatory leads to the family bathroom and upstairs to the guest accommodation. The family bathroom is inclusive of a bath with overhead shower, washbasin, toilet and towel rail.

Opposite the bathroom, the slightly spiralled low ceiling staircase leads to the landing. To the left, the landing continues through to the first spacious bedroom, overlooking the garden and front of the house. Ideal for the children, this room offers twin single beds, bedside tables, drawer, eves wardrobe storage, a vanity dresser and TV. A great retreat for the children while the adults enjoy themselves downstairs. An upstairs toilet room and a separate shower room can be found directly outside of this first bedroom.

Back towards the stairs, the gorgeous second bedroom is found. Leading up a single step into the bedroom you are welcomed by a bright country bedroom featuring the exposed beams, plush carpet and double size bed. Built-in wardrobes and a tall drawer provide ample storage space for your visit.

Finally, the master bedroom is reached. This gorgeous olde-worlde décor bedroom offers guests a comfortable rest on the king size bed, plenty of wardrobe storage in the built-in wardrobes and a vanity dresser and stool. Traditional local pictures of people and times gone by scatter the walls of Milton Cottage, especially in the master bedroom. The master offers great light from the low-level cottage windows overlooking the side garden.

What makes Milton Cottage so special – from the owner

I love the warm enveloping feeling I experience when I enter Milton Cottage. This has been my home from home for twenty years now and I love it in all seasons.

In Summer it is a haven of tranquillity to relax in the evening with an aperitif and enjoy the very verdant garden views. In cooler seasons the living area is warm and cosy and ideal to hibernate from any turbulent weather.

In addition the cottage is ideally placed to enjoy the local beaches, many local attractions and stunning coastal walks.

I hope visitors to Milton Cottage will enjoy it as much as my family and I have.
